Welcome to the Dictionary of Island Terms. Its purpose is to pin down the patois of Vancouver Island by recording its toponyms, nicknames, phenomena, slang, personalities and places. Explore the ever-growing A-Z here.

MacBlo | nickname | Short for forestry giant MacMillan Bloedel. Before being sold to an American concern in 1999, the company gave BC the Bloedel Conservatory and the eponymous/brutalist Erickson-designed building on West Georgia St. in Vancouver, but it was perhaps best known for giving Canada an international black eye for its clear-cutting of old growth temperate rainforests. In 1993, 850 people were arrested for their civil disobedience blockade of MacBlo’s logging operations in Clayoquot Sound. Today, its local legacy is largely as a symbol of corporate indifference to public protest and the environment.

Usage: “The best way to see the damage done by MacBlo is from the air…”
