Welcome to the Dictionary of Island Terms. Its purpose is to pin down the patois of Vancouver Island by recording its toponyms, nicknames, slang terms, personalities and places. Explore the ever-growing A-Z here.

Cougar Hat | protective talisman, practical garment | If you thought this was going to be about the clichéd hat choices of “single women of a certain age”, you’d be mistaken. A cougar hat is a specialty toque with a pair of bright eye patches sewn into the back so that a mountain lion might think twice about ambushing the wearer from behind. They are crafted by Thasis, BC by artist Tineke Veenhoven. (image via Youtube).

Usage | “If you’re going out alone, don’t forget to wear your Cougar Hat.”
