The Dishes is a repeating column that asks Islanders to walk us through a map of their ideal day and night on the town. We’re talking breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night cocktails. Tax and tip included.
For this edition of The Dishes, we tag along with Nick Nutting, co-owner/chef at Tofino’s award-winning Wolf in the Fog, for a whirlwind crawl of his favourite food and drink spots in and around the small seaside town. Buckle up and bring your appetite!
Good morning! What’s for breakfast/brunch?
Reuben pastry from Summit. Buttery pastry with sauerkraut, meat and mustard. Deadly.
Where should we meet for coffee/tea?
Tofino Coffee Co. — The best freshly roasted beans, expertly prepared. So much love.
Now we’re hungry again. What’s for lunch?
Sea Monster Noodle Br for a Dan Dan bowl with a side of kimchi and a can of beer. Or broiled oysters at SOBO with a margarita.
What if we still have an appetite and a thirst around Happy Hour?
Long Beach Lodge for cocktails with a view. The Hatch for great pizza and snacks, plus a pint of draft. Nice to have a few suds after a good day fishing right on the dock.
What’s for dinner?
Lil Ronnie’s BBQ for brisket and mac ‘n’ cheese. Perhaps a margarita as well. Great vibes. Near the beach. Close to home. Great stop on an evening dog walk. Bunch of good ‘ol boys running the show. Chicken karaage at Kuma with some nice sake.
What’s for dessert?
Key lime pie at SOBO. Mic drop. Pistachio or lavender honey ice cream at Chocolate Tofino for runner up.
Where are you taking us for late night cocktails?
The Maq for a Negroni or a shot of Jameson and a Lucky. When it’s last call in Tofino, The Maq has stood the test of time. The current team is amazing.
