Love Shrooms? Don’t Miss the Vancouver Island Mushroom Show

If you’ve noticed curious specimens of mushrooms popping up on lawns and in local forests lately you are not alone. Mushroom season is in full swing and there’s so much to know!

As luck would have it, the Vancouver Island Mushroom Show goes down this weekend. Head to Coombs to hook up with a crew of fungi lovers who can fill you in on everything shroomy. Ask questions, check out displays and identification tables, and get the scoop on what to look for and – so much more importantly – what to avoid.

The 2019 Mushroom Festival speaker list includes chef Paul Moran from Tofino Marina Resort and 1909 Restaurant, who will talk about foraging wild foods; biologist and writer Duane Sept, who will discuss common mushrooms of the Pacific NW; amateur mycologist Jason Gowan, who will get in to the topic of poisonous mushrooms; and writer/naturalist Kem Luther, who will talk about tribes of mushrooms.

In addition to speakers, there will be food trucks, community tables, fresh and dried mushrooms for sale, mushroom growing kits, and field guides.

From edible and medicinal to poisonous, dubious and deadly, there are scores of mushrooms on the scene right now so it’s a good idea to get schooled on the tasty, trippy, tricky little things. Find out more here.
