Head Out to Saanich for a Day of Winter Wine Touring

Looking for an excuse to skip the pre-holiday chaos of the city this weekend? How about running away for a day of winter wine touring? We suggest you leave the house before the Saturday rush and make for the Saanich Peninsula.

Stop for a spot of breakfast at Charlotte and The Quail before taking Old West Saanich Road north. Hereabouts you’ll find several wineries with their doors open for the weekend. Rathjen Cellars will be offering free wine tastings during their Christmas Open Hour (details) and selling their new releases (eg, Pinot Noir and batch #2 of their Crème de Cassis — dying to try this!). Symphony Vineyards and DeVine are also open. If you can get your hands on it, a bottle of Devine’s ‘Dutch Courage’ would make an excellent gift. Once you’ve had your fill of (responsible) exploring you can double back for a hike around Elk / Beaver Lake to fill your lungs with some fresh air before sliding back into town before dark.
