Islandist works with local companies to get the word out about the cool and delicious things they’re doing, but they couldn’t do what they do without access to awesome ingredients. To get what they need, they depend on personal networks of passionate artisans, farmers and producers who often work hard without ever seeing the glory they deserve. Since it’s always good to recognize those who have your back, we bring you the Supplier Shout Out!
Today we take a trip out to Sooke, to find out where Sheringham Distillery sources a couple of the incredible locally grown ingredients rounding out the recipe for their award-winning Kazuki Gin…
Who are you giving a shout out to? Westholme Tea Farm outside Duncan, BC.
What do they supply you with? Green tea leaves and flowers.
Which of your spirits features these ingredients? Kazuki Gin, 375 and 750ml, $25 and $46. Available in pretty much all private liquor stores in BC, as well as for sale in Alberta and Manitoba.
What makes this supplier so special? Westholme Tea Farm is owned and operated by Victor Vesely and Margit Nellemann. It’s one of only two tea farms in North America – the only in Canada – producing locally grown and harvested green tea. The tea leaves give a wonderful dry, early finish to the Kazuki Gin, adding tasting notes of the local terroir of the island itself. The green tea flowers add an almost creamy or velvety late finish, something unique to any gin in the world.
