Islandist is a very small operation built and executed on laptops and smartphones, more often than not in the ferry line-up in an old VW van. It was founded in 2019 by Michelle Sproule and Andrew Morrison, who also co-founded Vancouver’s Scout Magazine back in 2008.
Co-Founder / Publisher | A graduate of UVIC, Michelle is an avid photographer, storyteller and traveller who divides her time between Vancouver and Victoria. Before launching Scout in 2008 and Islandist in 2019, she worked as a donut seller, a restaurant server, a research librarian, and an antiquarian book restorer. She has paid rent in Oak Bay, Rockland, Cook Street Village and at several addresses across downtown Victoria, but feels most at home looking for the perfect rock at Mile Zero.
Co-Founder / Editor-in-Chief | Andrew was raised on a skateboard in James Bay. Before he got into food writing, judging the Canadian Culinary Championships, and advising enRoute and Macleans on Canada’s best restaurants, he worked in restaurants in Toronto, Vancouver, and Victoria (where his mother co-founded Bagga Pasta). The Vic High grad loves to cook and has worked on several cookbooks, including Vancouver Cooks 2 (2009) The Sobo Cookbook (2014) and Araxi: Roots to Shoots (2016). When he isn’t penning his thoughts on deliciousness or local history for Scout and Islandist, he is usually seeking out the middle of nowhere.
